Hey girls! Today I decided to share some of my favorite tips and tricks for saving money when shopping for new clothes! I love to shop, so finding good deals is something I take seriously! I have rounded up a few of the best tips that I use every time I go shopping, I hope you use one or two (or all of them!) next time you’re out at the mall! Let me know in the comments below some of the tips you use to save money when you’re out shopping. Enjoy!!
Tip #1: Before looking at the price of an item, decide how much you would be willing to pay for it. Once you decide how much you think the product is worth/ how much you’d pay for it, look at the price tag and see how it compares. Is it way more? Way less? The same? This helps you gage if the item is really worth the price tag. If the price tag is way higher than what you think it should be worth, maybe it’s just overpriced. If it’s lower, thats great! It obviously looks more expensive than it is, and it’s a steal!
Tip #2: Divide the price by how many times you plan to wear it within a year. I heard this trick from Stacy London on a fashion show on TV, and it stuck with me ever since. If an item is expensive, or more than you usually would spend on a garment, determine how many times you will actually wear the item and then divide the price by that number. How much is the item worth per wear? If each wear time is still expensive, maybe it’s just overpriced or not worth the big chunk of cash. For example, if a piece is worth $150 and you can only think of one or two occasions you’d be able to wear it- it’s not worth the money. But, if it is $150 and it’s a piece you can style with most of your wardrobe and you can see yourself wearing it multiple times, making the price per wear cheap, it could be worth the money! It’s all about knowing when to spend money on things that will be useful in your wardrobe, and saving on pieces that will only be worn a handful of times.
Tip #3: Take advantage of coupons and coupon codes. No matter what, every time I go shopping, whether it’s in store or online, I always look for coupons for the stores I am going to. I think that it is definitely more easy to use coupons when online shopping, though, because you have the freedom to add or delete things from the cart and play with codes until it fits your wants. I recommend always googling coupons for the stores you plan to be shopping at, you’d be surprised what you can find! Definitely check out www.RetailMeNot.com, it’s where I find a lot of my coupons! www.Groupon.com also sometimes has online coupon codes.
Tip #4: Get rid of the urge to shop by having an “online shopping free-for-all” . This tip is so random, but it seriously helps me so much!! If I ever have the urge to go shopping but know I shouldn’t be spending as much as I want to be, I go online and put everything I want into the shopping cart… but then shut the computer. The next day, I go back to the shopping cart and can more clearly think about what I really need to buy, and de-clutter the cart. Most of the time, I can narrow it down to one or two things I really need or sometimes realize I don’t even need any of the items. Sleeping on it really helps and it gets rid of the “shopping spree urge”, too.
Tip #5: Sometimes used items aren’t all that bad. One of my favorite things to do is browse sites that let you shop used clothing. It’s really not like these items are ever destroyed or no longer wearable, you can really find some great things! My favorite is www.Poshmark.com (follow me @alstrong)! I always check there first for an item I want, before I hit the stores. A lot of the times I actually find what I’m looking for, and it can be as cheap as 1/10 the price of what you’d find at the retailer. You’d be surprised, I can sometimes even find items that just came out in stores! Poshmark is also great for making money on items that you never wear anymore or are just taking up space in your closet. That’s money you can use towards new purchases! #Recycling
Tip #6: Know what you already have. Every few months I like to go through my closet, take everything out, and reorganize. This helps you realize what you have (there can be a lot you forget about), and then you can reorganize it in a better way. This helps you 1) know what you have and what you should or shouldn’t be buying more of and 2) help you put together outfits easier because you know where everything is. Side note: I like to organize my closet in “sections”. I have it now as, lounging T-shirts/ short sleeves/ long sleeves/ button downs and flannels/ work shirts/ sweaters/ cardigans/ lounge jackets/ denim and leather jackets/ rain and snow jackets/ lounge pants. It’s so so helpful to go into my closet and know exactly where an item I am looking for is!
Tip # 7: Ebates. I saved this tip for last, because it isn’t one I always remember to use. But, it’s supposed to save you a lot of money if you use it regularly! Basically, all you do is go to Ebates and shop the retailer you would have anyways. For example, if I wanted to shop at Nordstrom, I would go to Ebates and then go to Nordstrom’s through Ebates… then Ebates would give me a percentage of my purchase back. It’s actually pretty cool!
I hope these tips and tricks have inspired you to find some good deals! Now go out and do some shopping… but keep your wallet full!!
